We invite you to ‘Save the Date’ for
‘Long Term Experiments 2027: Lessons Learnt and Future Sustainability’.
This conference takes place in South Africa at Stellenbosch University and will include a day-visit to the Langgewens Research Farm.
Long-term experiments (LTEs) are valuable resources to assess the sustainability and resilience of agricultural practices and systems.
It is important to host this event in the Global South so as to provide more opportunities for local delegates to attend a high-profile international conference and also to highlight the crucial need for more LTEs in the Global South.
This conference will focus on using LTEs to meet current and future challenges in agriculture. We will explore how LTEs are advancing agronomy, agroecology, soil science, crop science modelling and statistics to underpin farming systems that support nutritious diets while safeguarding our environment.
A key conference focus will be to discuss how LTE datasets can be used to impact future farming practices. We will explore how LTEs can be redesigned so that they remain relevant in a changing climate.
The conference includes two days of oral presentations, posters and entertainment at Stellenbosch University. On the third day delegates will travel to the Langgewens Research Farm for talks from local experts and research site tours.
This is the third LTE conference organised by the Association of Applied Biologists, following successful events at Rothamsted Research in 2023 and Newcastle in 2018.
Conference Schedule
The majority of speakers will be selected from submitted abstracts, which represents a fantastic opportunity for early career researchers to present their work at an international conference.
Abstract submission will open in late 2026.
The Scientific Organising Committee will announce invited Keynote speakers later in 2026.
Draft List of Conference Topics:
– Sustainability and redesign of LTEs
– Soil health across LTEs
– Facilitating farmer community engagements with LTEs
– LTEs as a tool for modelling agricultural systems under global climate change
– Maximising diverse outputs and societal value of LTEs
– Methods for integrating LTEs with Living Labs
– Enabling student participation and public engagement with LTEs
– LTEs as a gold standard to develop new tools for data analysis, data reuse and data curation
– Lessons learnt from the global network of LTEs
– Examine the role of LTEs in evaluating the credibility of ‘Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV)’ claims and policy
