Carlos García-Mata is an Independent Researcher with CONICET and a faculty member in the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences at the National University of Mar del Plata, Argentina, where he co-leads the Molecular and Integrative Physiology laboratory at the Institute of Biological Research (IIB, CONICET–UNMdP).
His research addresses guard cell signalling: how stomata sense and integrate hormonal and environmental cues to control gas exchange and water loss. He works particularly on gasotransmitters — nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide — and their interaction with abscisic acid, phospholipid-derived second messengers and mitochondrial activity in driving stomatal closure. Recent work extends this to stomatal immunity during pathogen attack.
