Decolonising and Diversifying Biosciences Education
16/12/2022 @ 08:00 - 17:00
There is an urgent need to re-consider this, and to adopt a more diverse and decolonised approach. This meeting will examine how we teach the Biosciences through an equality and diversity lens.
Topics will include the historical legacies of colonialism on the Biosciences, the need to adopt more diverse and inclusive examples, ableism within the curriculum, awarding gaps for disadvantaged students, and how Biology education can better incorporate international perspectives.
The meeting will also include student perspectives, and the emotional implications of receiving a non-inclusive education. The meeting will encourage delegates to consider their own teaching practices, and to identify ways in which they could become more inclusive. This meeting therefore aligns closely with both the ‘Teaching and Learning’ and ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity’ aims of the OED section.
