Weibing Yang is a group leader in plant stem cell biology at the CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Science (CEMPS) / Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Shanghai, China, and a group leader within the CAS–JIC Centre of Excellence for Plant and Microbial Sciences (CEPAMS). He gained his PhD in genetics from the Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, CAS, in 2013, and spent six years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge, before returning to Shanghai in 2020.
His group studies how plant stem cells in the shoot meristem divide, differentiate and respond to environmental cues. This work has shown how the hormone cytokinin triggers stem cell division, and how patterned modification of the cell wall governs stem cell dynamics and organ formation. His earlier research addressed rice development and immunity.
He represents the Chinese Society for Plant Biology on the GPC board.
