SUMMARY:Data Manipulation with R Tidyverse
DESCRIPTION:This course will highlight useful tools of data manipulation from R’s Tidyverse suite of packages. The Tidyverse packages are built upon a philosophy of a tidy data structure: a rectangular (spreadsheet-like) data structure where each row is one observation\, each column is one variable\, and each cell contains one value. The Tidyverse packages follow a set of shared rules and share a common syntax style\, both designed to maximize code readability and reproducibility. \n\n\n\nThe emphasis of this short course will be on the core packages dplyr and tidyr in combination with packages specific to manipulating date-time data (lubridate)\, text data (stringr)\, and categorical data (forcats). SUMMARY:Care and Management of Natural History Collections
DESCRIPTION:Using a combination of lectures\, discussions\, demonstrations\, and readings\, this course will teach participants how to better care for and manage all natural history collections (including botany\, geosciences\, and zoology). \nThe importance of the collections storage environment is emphasized\, as well as the identification and selection of inert materials\, testing locally available materials\, adapting collections care standards to particular environmental conditions\, and good management through sound policies and collection planning. \nRather than the traditional discipline-based approach\, the course teaches collections care based on collection material and preparation type―dry preparations\, wet preparations\, and documentation (including paper-based and electronic media). \nThe course will benefit individuals who already have experience in caring for natural history collections\, as well as those who intend to work with natural history collections. \n\n\nOnline live sessions on 9th\, 11th\, 16th\, 18th\, 23rd\, and 25th of April\nFrom 16:00 to 20:30 (Madrid time zone)\nTotal course hours: 40\n\n\n— \nThe Global Plant Council members are entitled to a 20% discount on course fees using the discount code: GC927384

SUMMARY:Graphs with R’s ggplot
DESCRIPTION:In this two-day course\, students will learn to build and customize ggplot graphics.  The ggplot2 package is built upon the Grammar of Graphics of Leland Wilkenson.  Wilkenson described how all quantitative data visualizations share common component elements.  Learning this grammar enables efficient construction (or modification of) of professional graphics. \nThis course will teach the core elements (data\, aesthetics\, and geometries) as well as more advanced topics of information communication and styling (annotation\, themes\, and facets).  Class exercises will cover common visualization tasks such as rescaling axes\, managing legends\, reordering categories\, and highlighting data elements of special interest. \nStudents are encouraged to bring data and graph ideas based on their own work.
