SUMMARY:3rd PhD Meeting in Plant Science
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd PhD Meeting in Plant Science (3PMPS) is an international meeting for PhD students and young postdocs that will be held in Braga (Portugal) on the 9th of July as a satellite activity of the XXV Meeting of the Spanish Society of Plant Biology / XVIII Spanish Portuguese Congress of Plant Biology (PB2023). \nThe 3PMPS is a biennial meeting organized by Portuguese and Spanish PhD students\, with the main purpose of giving young researchers the opportunity to present their work and to create networks with other researchers in the same field of study. \nThis meeting is ideal for young plant researchers to present and discuss their scientific results in a relaxed environment. We believe this will lead to greater interaction and exchange of ideas between young investigators from different countries.‍ \nSelected PhD students and young postdocs are invited to give oral presentations\, flash talks\, or poster presentations during the meeting. All abstracts will be reviewed by a Scientific Committee (made up of early-career researchers)\, which will select oral presentations with the help of a senior Advisory Committee.

SUMMARY:Long Term Experiments: Meeting future challenges
DESCRIPTION:Long-term experiments (LTEs) are valuable resources to assess the sustainability and resilience of agricultural practices and systems.\nVISIT EVENT WEBSITE\nThis conference will focus on using LTEs to meet current and future challenges in agriculture. We will explore how LTEs are advancing agronomy\, agroecology\, soil science\, crop science and statistics to underpin farming systems that support nutritious diets while safeguarding our environment. \nA key focus will be collaboration between LTEs around the world\, including how new metadata platforms (such as the Global Long Term Experiment Network) and new statistical approaches enable data to be combined to answer questions pertinent to the Sustainability Development Goals. \nThis event allows delegates to present on-site or online to maximise the global engagement. The meeting includes oral presentations\, a poster session\, workshops\, a visit to the Rothamsted Long-Term Experiments\, and an optional conference dinner. \nThe conference will celebrate the 180th anniversary of the Broadbalk Winter Wheat experiment. Broadbalk is the world’s oldest field experiment\, and was established in 1843 to investigate the relative importance of different plant nutrients. Today\, it helps to answer questions about how farming practices\, inputs\, and weather patterns affect crop production. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Sessions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– Multi-LTE analysis (methods for joint analysis of datasets from multiple LTEs to answer novel questions) \n– Design and data analysis (making the most of LTEs via clever design and analysis      strategies) \n– New tools and sensors (new technologies and methods to capture new data) \n– Soil health (including C\, nutrient management\, and microbial activity) \n– Climate (assessing impacts of climate change and exploring adaptation and mitigation strategies) \n– Farm systems for the future (lessons from LTEs for designing future farming systems) \n– Nutrition from the ground up (links between soil\, plant\, animal\, and human nutrition) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInvited Speakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to announce the following confirmed speakers: \nChristine Watson (SRUC) \nJorgen Eivind Olesen (Aarhus University) \nChristian Thierfelder (CIMMYT) \nAndrew Neal (Rothamsted Research) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract Submission\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe encourage submission of abstracts for delegates to present their work linked to any aspect of using LTEs. \nWe will select oral presentations from both in-person and online delegates so please submit an abstract however you will participate in the meeting. \nEvent posters will be on show for two-days and we will be host an evening poster on June 20th. \nWe hope to announce the meeting schedule by the end of April 2023. \nSUBMIT AN ABSTRACT HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract Submission for oral presentation closes March 1st 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract Submission for poster presentations closes April 1st 2023 \nDOWNLOAD MEETING ADVERT

SUMMARY:Poster Design and Presentation Workshop\, 16 and 23 May 2023
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nIn this practical two-session workshop\, you’ll learn how to design and present your poster in a way that is engaging and interesting for your audience.  To start with\, you’ll learn how to think like your audience\, so that you can design your poster with them in mind. Then you’ll learn the basics of graphic design\, what makes a poster “pop”\, the different approaches to getting attention in a digital world\, and the tools you can use to design your poster. Finally\, you’ll focus on delivery: how to attract readers\, how to keep them interested\, and how to give them something to think about when they walk away. \nThis workshop will involve lots of small group activities and you’ll have many opportunities to try out your new skills\, present elements of a poster\, and give and receive feedback. By the end of this programme\, you’ll be able to put your skills to work and design a poster that you can present with confidence. \nThe two sessions will be one week apart. You must be available for both sessions to join. \n\nSession 1: Poster design – Tuesday\, 16 May 2023\nSession 2: Presentation skills – Tuesday\, 23 May 2023\n\nTo cover different time zones\, this workshop will be run in two different schedules that you will be able to choose during the booking stage. \n\nMorning: 10:00 am to 1:30 pm (UK time)\nLate Afternoon: 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm (UK time)\n\nCost\nFree and open to Centenary Conference attendees and SEB members. \nAudience\nThis course is for those who are new to designing and presenting posters and need to cover both “the basics” of poster layout and design\, and the more advanced skills of engaging people and telling them about their science on the day. \nIt is perfect for anyone wishing to present a poster at the SEB Centenary Conference 2023. \nWorkshop structure\nSession 1: Poster design will run on the 16 May 2023 and will focus on: \n\nWhat needs to be on your poster\nHow to choose what to include (and what to leave out)\nThe basics of graphic design\nDifferent poster layouts – what works\, what doesn’t\nSoftware for designing your poster\nAdding extra elements to make your poster more engaging\n\nActivities: group work\, creating a presentation in small groups\, experimenting with different layouts\, feedback sessions \nHomework: use the tools to map out a rough layout for your conference poster \nSession 2: Presentation skills will run on the 23 May 2023 and will focus on: \n\nHow to attract readers/interesting people\nPresenting your poster once you have their attention\nPresenting without notes\nKeeping an eye on your language\nNon-verbal communication\nGiving people something to take-away\n\nActivities: presenting homework in small groups (2-3 people max) for feedback\, practising non-verbal and delivery skills\, small group activities\, feedback sessions\, final presentation session applying new skills to outline poster. \n* You must be available for both sessions to join. \nLearning Outcomes\nBy the end of this two-session course\, participants will have learned how to create posters that are visually appealing and interesting\, and present them in a way that engages listeners\, invites questions\, and helps them expand their network and share their work. \nFor participants who engage in the course and invest time in the coursework\, there is a good chance that you will create an initial draft of your poster to present at The SEB Centenary Conference 2023 (Edinburgh). \nResources\nParticipants will be provided with a range of resources including: \n\nCopies of all whiteboard work\nPoster design templates\nDesign resources – guidelines & lists\, for example\, where to find images\, design tools\, QR code generators\, colour charts etc.\nGuides on voice\, power-language\, body language\, and other delivery techniques as reminders\nOther handouts and resources that seem useful based on the needs of the course participants\n\n* Please note that there will be no recordings of this workshop as there are too many interactive elements. \nQuestions\nEmail us at events@sebiology.org.

SUMMARY:Genomics-assisted breeding for boosting crop and livestock improvement
DESCRIPTION:The current global challenges of the climate crisis require to quickly adapt our agricultural and livestock production systems to become environmentally and economically sustainable. Technological advances in sequencing and phenotyping and the development of new computational and statistical tools provide an opportunity to address the socio-economic and environmental challenges that agriculture is currently facing. However\, the implementation of the most promising and advanced technologies in current breeding programs is still insufficient\, and there is still large room for improvement. The aim of this conference is to present and discuss the current advances in genome assisted breeding and to shed light on the challenges that need to be addressed to ensure food security for the next decades. \nWe warmly invite you to be part of this exciting conference\, which will be held in the lively city of Barcelona\, Spain\, this coming Spring (May 10-11\, 2023). Participants are encouraged to submit abstracts for poster presentations. The number of participants will be limited\, therefore early registration is recommended. \nThe workshop will be held at CosmoCaixa\, a beautiful modernist building that is nowadays an interactive Science Museum.

SUMMARY:Plant life at the extremes in the Atacama Desert - by Prof. Rodrigo Gutierrez
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rodrigo Gutierrez\n\nFull Professor at the Faculty of Biological Sciences\, \nPontificia Universidad Católica de Chile \n– Hosted by Professor Monika Chodasiewicz and Professor Heribert Hirt\n\nIf you are unable to attend in person at KAUST\, you can follow the seminar on Zoom.\n\n\nAbstract\n\nThroughout evolution\, plants adapted to flourish in a variety of ecosystems\, including extreme deserts. In the current changing climate scenario\, it is essential to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms that enable plant resilience under extreme conditions. We characterized three extreme ecosystems along a natural altitudinal gradient of environmental parameters on the western slopes of the Andes in the Atacama Desert. Using phylogenomics and metabolomics approaches\, we identified genes and metabolites involved in developmental\, regulatory and metabolic processes associated with environmental adaptation. Our study provides new insights into plant abiotic stress tolerance\, and improves our understanding of the highly unique\, pristine Atacama Desert ecosystem.\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nProfessor Rodrigo Gutierrez is a Full Professor and current Director for Research and Planning at the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Deputy Director of the Millennium Institute for Integrative Biology\, Principal Investigator at the Center for Genome Regulation and Investigator at the Ecology and Biodiversity Institute. He received multiple awards and honors during his career\, including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Early Career Scientist award\, John A. Boezi Memorial Alumnus Award from Michigan State University and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is one of the founders of the Chilean Society of Plant Biologists and its first elected president.

SUMMARY:Regenerative Agriculture – Understanding the opportunities and challenges
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid event hosted at Hilton York in York City Centre \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe concept of Regenerative Agriculture is successfully engaging the agricultural community\, food industry and policy makers to consider how to utilise agricultural land to maximise the delivery of ecosystem services. \nThere is no single definition of “regenerative agriculture”\, with interpretations varying between practitioners; but it can broadly be defined as “an approach to farming that uses soil conservation as the entry point to regenerate and contribute to the delivery of food production and other ecosystem services”. \nIn practice\, regenerative agriculture can be broken down into 5 key principles: 1) reduced soil disturbance; 2) retention of green cover; 3) retention of living roots in the soil; 4) crop diversification and 5) integration of livestock into rotations. \nIt is recognised that there is a need to bring together the scientific evidence supporting the implementation of regenerative agriculture\, to help evaluate the potential benefits and challenges for food production\, the environment and farm profitability\, across different agroclimatic zones and farming systems. This conference will bring together researchers\, consultants\, farmers\, agronomists and students to share research findings. \nWe invite abstracts that address the impact of regenerative farming on: soil\, water & air quality\, crop performance\, pest management\, farm economics and greenhouse gas balances & biodiversity and social barriers to uptake. Submitted abstracts can address either regenerative practices (e.g. crop residue retention\, cover crops or companion cropping\, reduced tillage\, use of organic manures\, diverse rotations)\, or whole system approaches (e.g. integrating livestock into rotations\, integrated pest management\, mob grazing or farm case studies). \nThe conference will include sessions on the above listed topics and subject area\, and will conclude with a panel discussion which we hope will include farming representatives. The objective of the panel discussion will be to challenge scientists to work with farmers\, in order to help develop the evidence base to support and justify the transition into regenerative agriculture. We hope that a position paper/statement can be generated from this discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSessions will be built around topics that are linked to the principles of regenerative agriculture. \n\nReducing soil disturbance\nRetaining green cover\nRetaining living roots\nDiversification of crops\nIntegrating livestock into crop rotations\n\nInvited speakers and Panel members \n\nLizzie Sagoo\, Soil Scientist\, ADAS Sustainable Agriculture Systems.\nAlastair Leake\, Director of Policy · The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust\nRuth Wade\, Research Fellow\, University of Leeds\nEmily Padfield\, Nuffield Scholar\nDavid Blacker\, Yorkshire Farmer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall for Abstracts\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe encourage submission of abstracts from all sectors interested in Regenerative Agriculture including those in academia\, policy\, farming or industry. We are very interested in promoting research on the impact of Regenerative Agriculture\nSessions will mostly be comprised of talks selected from submitted abstracts. Please submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation whether you will attend as an in-person or online delegate. \nAbstract submission deadline is February 15th 2023

SUMMARY:Phytohormones Congress - Metabolism and mode of action
DESCRIPTION:XVI Phytohormones Symposium: Metabolism and mode of action\, of the Spanish Society of Plant Biology \nAfter a break due to the Covid19 pandemic\, the SEBP Phytohormones Group will hold its meeting this year\, 2023\, at the Convento de Mínimos de Segovia (Spain) from April 19 to 21. \nSimilar to other years\, the format of the meeting will be 15-minute talks plus question time\, trying to ensure that most of the laboratories that attend have representation. We would also like to give visibility to the youngest in these talks. \nThis year we want to launch a new poster presentation format\, which will be in a digital version. The posters will be uploaded to a cloud where researchers will have the opportunity to visit them. To do this\, you can use your own computers or tablets that we will make available to you. The poster will have a link email for further discussion if you want. \nBoth the summary of the talks and the posters will be collected in a book that will only be online\, but will have an ISSBN number.

SUMMARY:The 19th International Workshop on Plant Membrane Biology
DESCRIPTION:Since 1968\, the International Workshop on Plant Membrane Biology (IWPMB) has provided a stimulating platform to discuss research advances related to plant membranes and to exchange new ideas. After much discussion among the Organizing Committee\, we have decided that the theme of the 19th conference will be on how membrane transport is integrated with signaling\, physiology\, biotic and abiotic stresses\, and development\, and what new technologies and systems approaches can be adopted to address new questions and challenges. \nThe meeting was originally scheduled to be held in October 2022\, but the global pandemic prompted us to postpone it to March 2023. In doing so\, we are pleased to be able to conduct in-person meetings and\, coincidentally\, March is a very pleasant time of year to visit Taiwan. The pandemic has forced isolation on us for some time and\, undoubtedly\, we are all eager to have this opportunity to meet colleagues with common interests and to have stimulating and fruitful discussions to drive our research forward. \nIn order to encourage early career PIs\, postdoctoral researchers and students to attend IWPMB\, we have allocated funding for fellowships to subsidize some of their travel costs. Accordingly\, when you register\, please indicate if you would like to be considered for the fellowship competition. \nTaipei is a fascinating city\, with a mix of modern and traditional elements\, and it is enriched with natural beauty\, historical temples\, and diverse dining experiences both in graceful restaurant atmospheres and in the vibrant night markets. The local Organizing Committee and I will do our very best to make this workshop a success and your stay here comfortable and enjoyable.

SUMMARY:The 64th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the 64th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists (Sendai Annual Meeting) will be held as an in-person meeting. The previous three meetings\, in Osaka\, Matsue\, and Tsukuba\, could not be held in person\, so if it is held as planned\, it will be the first in-person annual meeting for four years. The pandemic has restricted many activities\, including research. On the other hand\, there has been a by-product in the dramatic development of online communication tools. The success of the Matsue and Tsukuba Annual Meetings\, which were held online\, showed us a new direction for the Annual Meetings. The Sendai Annual Meeting will therefore be a hybrid meeting that can also be attended online\, with the aim of ensuring that “no one is left behind”. \nTo the website: https://jspp.org/annualmeeting/64/e_greeting.php

SUMMARY:HortQFLNet_AAB Kick-off Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Over the past three years the UKRI-BBSRC funded HortQFLNetwork has acted as a collective voice for the UK horticultural and postharvest research community. The network has provided pump-priming funding for 20 projects and organisation of relevant events. The HortQFL network leadership is engaging in a new relationship with the Association of Applied Biologists in order to build-upon the excellent work of the network. The AAB will start a new specialist group in ‘Horticultural Quality and Food Loss’ which will lead to the organisation of activities and events in this important area to ensure scientists can continue to work together in pursuit of relevant Sustainable Development Goals. \nThe HortQFL network and the AAB are planning this event to celebrate the success of recently-funded research and to explore cutting edge opportunities to move the field forwards. We will hear from grant-awardees\, international keynote speakers and from a selection of speakers who have submitted abstracts to give an oral or a poster presentation. \nThis hybrid meeting is hosted at Cranfield University and is both the HortQFL Network annual meeting and the kick-off of the AAB ‘Horticultural Quality and Food Loss’ group. This is also the perfect follow-on from the 2022 AAB HortStresses meeting that was held at the University of Reading.

SUMMARY:Decolonising and Diversifying Biosciences Education
DESCRIPTION:There is an urgent need to re-consider this\, and to adopt a more diverse and decolonised approach. This meeting will examine how we teach the Biosciences through an equality and diversity lens. \nTopics will include the historical legacies of colonialism on the Biosciences\, the need to adopt more diverse and inclusive examples\, ableism within the curriculum\, awarding gaps for disadvantaged students\, and how Biology education can better incorporate international perspectives. \nThe meeting will also include student perspectives\, and the emotional implications of receiving a non-inclusive education. The meeting will encourage delegates to consider their own teaching practices\, and to identify ways in which they could become more inclusive. This meeting therefore aligns closely with both the ‘Teaching and Learning’ and ‘Equality\, Diversity and Inclusivity’ aims of the OED section.
