SUMMARY:Creating Canopy: the biology and practice of establishing trees and woodlands for people and nature
DESCRIPTION:VISIT MEETING WEBSITE\nWoodland creation has never been more important.\nWe need more woodland for people to enjoy\, for nature\, to sustain our timber security and to help reduce the impact of climate change. We need more trees in urban areas for health\, well-being and environmental benefits. However the simple act of planting or establishing a tree is not quite so simple as it first appears! What is the right tree for the right site? What are evidenced-based scientific\, technical and social challenges and barriers to success? \nUnderpinning these activities is the need for knowledge of tree biology and ecology\, irrespective whether trees are established in urban\, rural or wild landscapes. Creating canopy is not just about planting trees as new nature-based solutions are emerging that help us create new tree and woodland habitats through natural colonisation and regeneration. At the present time we are not establishing enough tree and woodland canopy to meeting targets for NetZero emissions and there is uncertainty about the form and structure of tree and woodland canopy cover into the future. Science and technology play a vital role in establishing trees and woodlands. \nThis event has two phases. Firstly a two-day conference will shine a light on new and emerging priorities\, latest research and technical advances related to creating canopy. Second on day 3 we will host a workshop co-organised by the FraxNet Network. Delegates are invited to join for two or three days\, either in-person or virtually. \n\nMajor Themes in ‘Creating Canopies’\n· Urban Canopies – merging engineering with nature solutions? \n· Natural processes – colonisation and natural regeneration to increase taxonomic and functional diversity \n· What grows with what? Tree and woodland establishment in agroforestry systems \n· Planting new productive woodlands – biology\, genetics and ecology \n· A climate of change – genotype and species choices for the future \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInvited Speakers\nDouglass Jacobs\, Regeneration and Restoration Silviculture Laboratory\, Purdue University\, USA \nEstrella Luna-Diaz\, BIFoR\, University of Birmingham\, UK \nManuel  Esperon-Rodriguez\, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment\, Western Sydney University\, Australia \nJo Bradwell\, Norbury Park Estate and JABBS Foundation \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInvited Speaker for FraxNet meeting \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Cleary\, Senior Lecturer in Forest Pathology\, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences \nRuth Mitchell\, Biodiversity and Ecosystems Group Lead\, James Hutton Institute \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract Submission\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe encourage submission of abstracts for delegates to present their work linked to any aspect of tree-planting. \nSUBMIT AN ABSTRACT HERE\nWe will select oral presentations from both in-person and online delegates so please submit an abstract however you will participate in the meeting. Abstracts submitted will be considered for both the main two-day ‘Creating Canopies’ event and for day three ‘EU-Ash Network’ event. \nA evening poster session and drinks reception will be hosted on Day 1 with the posters on show for all three days of the event. \nWe hope to announce the meeting schedule in September 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDEFRA Travel grants \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe UK Government ‘Department of the Environment and Rural Affairs’ (DEFRA) is supporting the attendance of early career professionals by providing grants to cover travel and accommodation costs. There is a £2000 available which will be shared amongst eliigble applicants. AAB Early Career Professionals are current students or anyone within 5 years of finishing full-time education. \nPlease download the application form and return within one month of the meeting. Successful applications will need to write a short report that reflects on their experience at the meeting. \nDOWNLOAD APPLICATION FORM (doc)

SUMMARY:5th International Symposium on the Nitrogen Nutrition of Plants - Nitrogen 2023
DESCRIPTION:Nitrogen 2023\, a meeting of people with an interest in plant nitrogen regulation\, metabolism and transport. Nitrogen 2023 will meet in Sydney Australia on November 6-9\, 2023. \nThe meeting will be held at the University of Sydney in the inner suburb of Camperdown which sits just outside the central business district.\n \nThe Fifth International Symposium on the Nitrogen Nutrition of Plants (Nitrogen 2023) brings together those with a keen interest in plant nitrogen and how best this important nutrient can be used to support plant growth and ultimately produce food\, fibre and oil. With looming global protein shortages expected by 2050\, there has never been a more important period in plant science research to better understand the processes controlling N accessibility\, N metabolism and the delivery of amino acids and proteins to an increasingly hungry planet.  Our ability to meet many of the UN Sustainability Development Goals is intimately linked to improved N fertiliser use and the expansion in availability of protein-enriched foods sourced predominantly from plant inputs.  It’s time to get to work and help solve these problems.

SUMMARY:Plantae Presents: Importance of Self-care and Community Care
DESCRIPTION:The global pandemic has largely affected the global population of adults and children in negative ways. There is an increased in the incidences of anxiety\, isolation\, lower distress tolerance\, and depressive episodes. People engaged in research (mentors and mentees) are more likely to experience these feelings\, often affecting how people build connections. In response\, self-care and community care have emerged as important aspects of everyone’s daily lives. In recognition of “World Mental Health Month\,” this webinar will explore self-care and community care. Speakers will share the strategies they have developed to support the people in their labs and spaces\, as well as insights on balancing community care and self-care. \nThis webinar is hosted by the 2023 Plantae Fellows.

SUMMARY:IUFRO Forest Environment DIV8 Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:IUFRO Forest Environment is pleased to announce the All Division 8 Conference in 2023. The event will be held in-person\, in Évora\, Portugal\, on 24th-27th October 2023\, at the University of Évora\, in the center of this historical UNESCO World Heritage town\, located in South of Portugal\, 140 km from Lisbon. \nThe conference will focus on the critical role of forested landscapes facing pressures driven by the Anthropocene. Many of the increasing challenges require approaches at different spatial and temporal scales to increase understanding about the different ongoing processes and their consequences for ecological and socio-ecological systems to find well-suited solutions towards increasing sustainability. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nChanging landscapes towards sustainability often requires transformational and transitional thinking\, knowledge and innovative approaches\, including changes in how biodiversity is perceived and valued\, new relationships between societal actors\, new rules and management schemes\, as well as supportive rather than controlling roles of governments. All these demands a holistic vision from society and decision-makers to ensure more resilient forested landscapes and better adapted to the most predictable scenarios of climate change and disturbance regimes.

SUMMARY:New Phytologist Now – 'Understanding local plant extinctions before it’s too late: bridging evolutionary genomics with global ecology’
DESCRIPTION:Hear from Moi Exposito-Alonso\, 2022 Joint Tansley Medal winner\, exploring his Tansley insight\, ‘Understanding local plant extinctions before it’s too late: bridging evolutionary genomics with global ecology’. \nAbstract: Understanding evolutionary genomic and population processes within a species range is key to anticipating the extinction of plant species before it is too late. However\, most models of biodiversity risk under global change do not account for the genetic variation and local adaptation of different populations. Population diversity is critical to understanding extinction because different populations may be more or less susceptible to global change and\, if lost\, would reduce the total diversity within a species. Two new modeling frameworks advance our understanding of extinction from a population and evolutionary angle: Rapid climate change-driven disruptions in population adaptation are predicted from associations between genomes and local climates. Furthermore\, losses of population diversity from global land-use transformations are estimated by scaling relationships of species’ genomic diversity with habitat area. Overall\, these global eco-evolutionary methods advance the predictability – and possibly the preventability – of the ongoing extinction of plant species. \nHosted by New Phytologist Editor Elena Kramer\nStarts at 17:30 BST\, 9.30 PDT

SUMMARY:Malaysian Society of Plant Physiology Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:Scope : Globally\, ecosystems and their constituent flora face the localized and broad-scale influence of human activities. Conservation practitioners and environmental managers struggle to identify and mitigate threats\, reverse species declines\, restore degraded ecosystems\, and manage natural resources sustainably. Scientific research and evidence are increasingly regarded as the foundation for new regulations\, conservation actions\, and management interventions. Conservation biologists and managers have traditionally focused on the characteristics (e.g. abundance\, structure\, trends) of populations\, species\, communities\, and ecosystems\, and simple indicators of the responses to environmental perturbations and other human activities. However\, an understanding of the specific mechanisms underlying conservation problems is becoming increasingly important for decision-making\, in part because physiological tools and knowledge are especially useful for developing cause-and-effect relationships\, and for identifying the optimal range of habitats and stressor thresholds for different organisms. \n\nWho should attend? Researchers\, academicians\, students\, plantation and forest managers\, natural resources stakeholders\, extension officers\, national advisory agency officers\, sociologists\, economists\, funding agency officers\, managers involved in agro-industry\, environment\, science and engineering sectors\, and policy makers. \n\n\nObjectives : \n\nTo disseminate research findings on plant biodiversity through conservation\, physiology\, and sustainable production.\nTo promote organised plant physiology research by encouraging inter-disciplinary and inter-agency collaboration.\n\nTo register: https://mspp.org.my/event.php?id=020
