It constitutes an excellent opportunity for knowledge exchange\, presentation of novelties at the conceptual and methodology levels\, thus expanding visibility and promoting collective scientific enrichment and the establishment of new and potentially fruitful collaborations. \nNowadays\, one of the aims of the plant molecular biology research is to fulfill the increasing demands of agriculture and the challenges of climate change is posing on food production. Therefore\, this meeting will focus on fundamental and applied research considering the needs of agriculture and presenting new advances in plant biotechnology. To attain these objectives\, the meeting has the support of the biotechnological platform BIOVEGEN. \nAs in past editions\, the active participation of young researchers in both the scientific committee and the oral presentation of their work is strongly encouraged. To this respect\, as a gold standard to ensure an excellent scientific level\, we have invited senior researchers of international prestige for plenary sessions. The meeting is fully committed to gender equality\, as seen in the composition of the scientific and organizing committees. \nThe XVII RBMP will be held in Castelló de la Plana\, a small city by the Mediterranean Sea\, with a unique architecture and gastronomy and an important historical background. The historical and artistic heritage of Castelló is reflected in its numerous monuments\, which can be admired in a walk through its old town. Some of the most outstanding are the cathedral of Santa María\, of Gothic style; the town hall\, of neoclassical style; the Fadrí\, the independent bell tower of the cathedral; the central market\, of modernist style; the municipal palace\, of Renaissance style; or the Real Casino Antiguo\, of eclectic style. The museums of Castelló offer a wide variety of themes\, such as the Museum of Fine Arts\, the Ethnological Museum\, the Ceramic Museum\, the Orange Museum or the City Museum\, at walking distance from the city center. The gastronomy is based on fresh products from the orchard\, the sea\, or the mountain being rice dishes the most popular. The beaches of Castelló are another of its great attractions\, as they have an extension of 8.6 kilometers of fine and golden sand\, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea. \nWe are looking forward to having you here in our University Jaume I\, in Castelló de la Plana\, and enjoy your presence in a relaxing and friendly environment.

SUMMARY:Summer School 2024 - Plant science to tackle climate change
DESCRIPTION:This Summer school is co-organized by the French Saclay Plant Sciences (SPS) network and the German Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS). \n \nMankind is facing an unprecedented challenge from anthropogenic climate change. This is already associated with altered rainfall patterns\, extreme weather events and less predictable seasonal patterns\, which are expected to increase in the future. Climate change is a major challenge to crop production\, food security and therefore to human society. \nAgriculture is a victim of climate change but also a culprit since 20-25% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are released through agricultural activities. Without a substantial diet change\, the ever-growing world population will require a 70-100% increase of agricultural productivity by 2050 to produce enough food. This must be achieved in a sustainable manner without compromising nutritional quality and in a context of decreasing GHG emissions and increasing C-sequestration to help mitigate global climate change. This complex scenario will require resilient\, higher yielding crops having a more efficient use of water and minerals\, and suited to climate-change adapted cultivation schemes and practices. Moreover\, laboratory/researcher practices will also have to be modified to accommodate low energy-use/low C-footprint research activities. \nIn this context\, the SPS-CEPLAS Summer School 2024 will focus on introducing and discussing strategies\, techniques and practices to carry out next generation plant research aimed at improving sustainable climate-change friendly plant productivity. \nThe summer school will bring together outstanding and enthusiastic young scientists (PhD students and young post-docs) and high-level researchers from all over the world in order to exchange knowledge and ideas. It is limited to a small group of participants (20 maximum) to privilege informal interactions and scientific discussions. \nProvisional program and speakers\nDownload the provisional program of the Summer School \nThis Summer School will include: \n         > Theoretical modules and discussions (~18 hours):\nThe objective is to address key climate change challenges from the perspective of plant sciences. Scientists will give lectures and lead discussions\, giving the participants an insight into the latest research findings and identifying key open questions in the field. Lectures will focus on reducing agricultural GHG emissions\, improving plant productivity/resilience to climate change\, and the challenges of next generation low energy-use/low C-footprint research. They will be presented in 4 sessions comprising a general overview followed by more focused research/technical talks from invited experts. \nN-inputs & emissions\nConcepts addressed: N-use-efficiency in crop species\, N signalisation\, allocation & remobilization\, N metabolism & microbes in the context of climate change\nConfirmed speakers:\nJacques Le-Gouis\, (GDEC\, Clermont-Ferrand\, France)\nAnne Krapp (IJPB\, Versailles\, France)\nFabien Chardon (IJPB\, Versailles\, France)\nAlia Dellagi (IJPB\, Versailles\, France) \nCO2 capture and C sequestration\nConcepts addressed: Improving photosynthesis\, sugar transport & partitioning\, C-sequestration in trees and soil\nConfirmed speakers:\nAmanda Cavanagh (Essex University\, UK)\nSylvie Dinant (IJPB\, Versailles\, France)\nPhilippe Ciais (LSCE\, Saclay\, France) \nPlant resilience to predicted climate change conditions\nConcepts addressed:\nThe interaction of elevated atmospheric CO2 with plant mineral nutrition & abiotic stresses\, stomata & stress signalling\, the influence of bacteria on environmental stress resilience & N-nutrition\, the influence of climate change on biotic stress resistance and computational modeling of photosynthetic acclimation\nConfirmed speakers:\nRosa Morcuende (IRNASA\, Salamanca\, Spain)\nHannes Kollist (Institute of Technology\, Tartu University\, Estonia)\nAntoine Martin (IPSiM\, Montpellier\, France)\nDaniela Ristova (Institute for Plant Sciences\, Cologne University\, Germany)\nGuillem Rigaill (IPS2\, University Paris-Saclay\, Gif-sur-Yvette\, France)\nMarina Cotta (MPIPZ\, Cologne\, Germany)\nHeribert Hirt (KAUST\, Saudi Arabia)\nAxel de Zélicourt (IPS2\, University Paris-Saclay\, Gif-sur-Yvette\, France)\nRichard Berthomé (LIPME\, Toulouse\, France)\nAnna Matuszynska (RWTH Aachen University\, Germany) \nFuture research practices & opportunities\nConcepts addressed:\nHow to reduce the C-footprint of scientific research & implement and promote environmentally friendly research practices\, agroecology\, biodiversity & climate change\, and how to help farmers move towards a climate change sustainable agriculture\nConfirmed speakers:\nJean Colcombet (IPS2\, University Paris-Saclay\, Gif-sur-Yvette\, France)\nPaul Leadley (ESE\, IDEEV\, University Paris-Saclay\, Gif-sur-Yvette\, France)\nSophie Gendre (Arvalis\, France) \n         > Workshop on outreach and communication (7 hours)\nThis workshop will be led by Isabel Mendoza of the Global Plant Council. After a presentation on different forms of scientific communication including social media\, participants will form groups\, given a hot-topic paper on plants & climate change and asked to deliver communications aimed at the general public. \n         > Collaborative Climate Fresk workshop (3 hours)\nClimate Fresk is a powerful tool that provides a quality climate education. It requires all participants to take an active role in building the Fresk by linking causes and effects of climate change.\nhttps://climatefresk.org/ \n         > Participant flash-talks and poster session (5 hours)\nEach participant will give a short “get to know me” flash talk at the beginning of the Summer School. The poster session will be organized to allow each participant to discuss his/her poster and to see all posters. It will finish with a general discussion and a “best” poster prize.

SUMMARY:Data Manipulation with R Tidyverse
DESCRIPTION:This course will highlight useful tools of data manipulation from R’s Tidyverse suite of packages. The Tidyverse packages are built upon a philosophy of a tidy data structure: a rectangular (spreadsheet-like) data structure where each row is one observation\, each column is one variable\, and each cell contains one value. The Tidyverse packages follow a set of shared rules and share a common syntax style\, both designed to maximize code readability and reproducibility. \n\n\n\nThe emphasis of this short course will be on the core packages dplyr and tidyr in combination with packages specific to manipulating date-time data (lubridate)\, text data (stringr)\, and categorical data (forcats). Class exercises will provide practice restructuring data\, value replacement\, group operations\, and row- and column-wise functions. \nThe course content assumes some prior basic R experience and will require a current install of both R and RStudio. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n— \nThe Global Plant Council members are entitled to a 20% discount on course fees using the discount code: GC927384

SUMMARY:V All Africa Horticultural Congress - AAHC2024
DESCRIPTION:The All Africa Horticultural Congress (AAHC) is the most important scientific event organized every four years in the field of Horticulture in Africa under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). Morocco was assigned the organization of the 5th edition of this Congress and this will be the first time such event will be held in North Africa. The previous four AAHCs took place in Kenya in 2009\, South Africa in 2012\, Nigeria in 2016 and Senegal in 2021\, corresponding to East Africa\, South Africa\, Central Africa\, and Western Africa\, respectively. \nThe development of Horticulture in Africa is one of the main tools that can help ensure food security. It can also improve agricultural productivity and increase the competitiveness of agricultural products\, strengthen its contribution to the overall wellbeing of the population\, improve dietary and nutritional behavior\, create wealth\, alleviate hunger\, and reduce dependency on food imports. \nIn Morocco\, Agriculture contributes\, on average\, 13% to Morocco’s GDP and employs about 40% of the nation’s workforce.\nThe country has several agro-climatic regions including 3\,500 km of Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts\, temperate in the north\, semi-arid in the center and arid-to-desert in the south with somewhat mild/cold in the higher altitudes of the Atlas Mountains and\, thus\, produces a great diversity of agricultural products\, including horticultural crops such as fruits\, vegetables\, medicinal and aromatic species\, flowers\, and ornamental plants. These are produced mainly in open field but crops such as tomatoes\, pepper\, berries\, banana\, and flowers are also produced under plastic-covered greenhouses. \nMost of the production is for the domestic market but a significant percentage\, particularly fruits\, vegetables and flowers\, goes to export markets\, including Africa\, Europe\, and North America. Morocco is the first larger exporter of berries and third larger exporter of tomatoes worldwide.\nOperators of the horticultural sector are all private. Small-scale growers are also an important milestone of the system. They contribute to the export activities through organized cooperatives and associations. \n“Unlocking the potential of a resilient Horticulture in Africa” is the theme of the 5th AAHC\, with the objective to discuss and promote the huge potential of African Horticulture. \nThe event will provide a platform for professionals\, researchers\, young scientists\, and entrepreneurs\, where they can share their research results\, experiences\, and latest innovations. It will be an occasion to create new and consolidate and expand ongoing networks of technical cooperation between professionals in horticulture throughout Africa and the rest of the world. Young and more experienced scientists will have ample opportunities to interact and explore scientific and technical exchanges and partnerships for research and development initiatives.\nIn addition\, the Congress will raise and discuss aspects related to the impact of climate change\, invasive diseases and pests and other biotic and abiotic stresses on current and future horticulture and its resilience. \nFurthermore\, socio-economic and financial aspects related to food security\, market issues\, best use\, and management of natural resources in the field will be tackled. Themes\, such as contribution of horticulture to overall wellbeing\, wealth creation\, alleviating poverty\, empowering youth\, and women will also be discussed. \nTo register: https://www.aahc2024.com/

SUMMARY:Webinar – Let’s Talk About Planted Forests
DESCRIPTION:The Let’s Talk About Planted Forests webinar will take place on 19 January 2024 at 1.30 pm CET. \nLet’s Talk About Planted Forests webinar will focus on Forest Risk and Insurance. \nGlobal change is increasing and diversifying the risks that threaten European forests: drought\, insects\, fire\, storms\, hail\, etc. In the case of planted forests\, where an investor is betting on the future\, the role of insurance in protecting against these risks is essential. However\, we have observed that in some countries the level of risk is calling into question the principle of insuring forests\, so it seemed appropriate to invite insurance experts to share their views on the future role of insurance in forests. \nTo discuss this subject\, the IEFC invited 3 speakers. Here’s a quick overview of our speakers: \n\nGuillaume Bouffard\, MISSO GROUPAMA: «Recent bushfires in Australia and France : lessons learnt for an insurer specialising in Forest risks»\nPhil Cottle\, ForestRe Ltd.\n\nPeter Welten\, Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd.\n\nRegister: https://www.plantedforests.org/es/webinar-lets-talk-about-planted-forests-registration-forest-risk-and-insurance/

SUMMARY:AAB Early Career Professional Science and Skills Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at the University of Leicester \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Association of Applied Biologists has a unique cohort of early career professional members as it includes members who work across academia\, industry\, farming and agriculture. This sets the AAB apart from other societies whose membership cohorts are more homogenous. Therefore we want to organise an event that brings together this group in order to help build cross-disciplinary linkages. We surveyed our ECP cohort and the consensus was that you would like the AAB to organise an event that mixed opportunities to present their research and to discuss skills\, careers and training. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApplication process for Workshop Participants \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe can invite a maximum 50 in-person participants to this event\, which is open to both AAB members and non-members. We are currently searching for sponsors to support the meeting but the final registration will be no-more than £100 for the two-day event\, which includes a single night of accommodation. Delegates must be able to fund their own travel to the event. \n1.  We will ask potential attendees to apply for the workshop by telling us why it would be useful for their career. Deadline for these applications is October 15th. Applicants will be anonymously selected on both the strength of their application statement and also on their current position so that we have a mix of attendees from across sectors. Selected participants will be able to register for the meeting before November 16th. \n2. Selected participants will have the opportunity (not compulsory) to submit an abstract in order to either present a current project with a short talk or poster presentation. The deadline for abstract submission will be November 3rd. \nIn an AAB context Early Career Professionals are students and anyone within 5-years of finishing full-time education and this 5-years  is exclusive of any time spent on career-breaks\, maternity leave etc. We very much encourage applications from across sectors.
