SUMMARY:Data Manipulation with R Tidyverse
DESCRIPTION:This course will highlight useful tools of data manipulation from R’s Tidyverse suite of packages. The Tidyverse packages are built upon a philosophy of a tidy data structure: a rectangular (spreadsheet-like) data structure where each row is one observation\, each column is one variable\, and each cell contains one value. The Tidyverse packages follow a set of shared rules and share a common syntax style\, both designed to maximize code readability and reproducibility. \n\n\n\nThe emphasis of this short course will be on the core packages dplyr and tidyr in combination with packages specific to manipulating date-time data (lubridate)\, text data (stringr)\, and categorical data (forcats). Class exercises will provide practice restructuring data\, value replacement\, group operations\, and row- and column-wise functions. \nThe course content assumes some prior basic R experience and will require a current install of both R and RStudio. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n— \nThe Global Plant Council members are entitled to a 20% discount on course fees using the discount code: GC927384

SUMMARY:V All Africa Horticultural Congress - AAHC2024
DESCRIPTION:The All Africa Horticultural Congress (AAHC) is the most important scientific event organized every four years in the field of Horticulture in Africa under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). Morocco was assigned the organization of the 5th edition of this Congress and this will be the first time such event will be held in North Africa. The previous four AAHCs took place in Kenya in 2009\, South Africa in 2012\, Nigeria in 2016 and Senegal in 2021\, corresponding to East Africa\, South Africa\, Central Africa\, and Western Africa\, respectively. \nThe development of Horticulture in Africa is one of the main tools that can help ensure food security. It can also improve agricultural productivity and increase the competitiveness of agricultural products\, strengthen its contribution to the overall wellbeing of the population\, improve dietary and nutritional behavior\, create wealth\, alleviate hunger\, and reduce dependency on food imports. \nIn Morocco\, Agriculture contributes\, on average\, 13% to Morocco’s GDP and employs about 40% of the nation’s workforce.\nThe country has several agro-climatic regions including 3\,500 km of Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts\, temperate in the north\, semi-arid in the center and arid-to-desert in the south with somewhat mild/cold in the higher altitudes of the Atlas Mountains and\, thus\, produces a great diversity of agricultural products\, including horticultural crops such as fruits\, vegetables\, medicinal and aromatic species\, flowers\, and ornamental plants. These are produced mainly in open field but crops such as tomatoes\, pepper\, berries\, banana\, and flowers are also produced under plastic-covered greenhouses. \nMost of the production is for the domestic market but a significant percentage\, particularly fruits\, vegetables and flowers\, goes to export markets\, including Africa\, Europe\, and North America. Morocco is the first larger exporter of berries and third larger exporter of tomatoes worldwide.\nOperators of the horticultural sector are all private. Small-scale growers are also an important milestone of the system. SUMMARY:Webinar – Let’s Talk About Planted Forests
DESCRIPTION:The Let’s Talk About Planted Forests webinar will take place on 19 January 2024 at 1.30 pm CET. \nLet’s Talk About Planted Forests webinar will focus on Forest Risk and Insurance. \nGlobal change is increasing and diversifying the risks that threaten European forests: drought\, insects\, fire\, storms\, hail\, etc. In the case of planted forests\, where an investor is betting on the future\, the role of insurance in protecting against these risks is essential. However\, we have observed that in some countries the level of risk is calling into question the principle of insuring forests\, so it seemed appropriate to invite insurance experts to share their views on the future role of insurance in forests. \nTo discuss this subject\, the IEFC invited 3 speakers. Here’s a quick overview of our speakers: \n\nGuillaume Bouffard\, MISSO GROUPAMA: «Recent bushfires in Australia and France : lessons learnt for an insurer specialising in Forest risks»\nPhil Cottle\, ForestRe Ltd.\n\nPeter Welten\, Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd.\n\nRegister: https://www.plantedforests.org/es/webinar-lets-talk-about-planted-forests-registration-forest-risk-and-insurance/

SUMMARY:AAB Early Career Professional Science and Skills Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at the University of Leicester \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Association of Applied Biologists has a unique cohort of early career professional members as it includes members who work across academia\, industry\, farming and agriculture. This sets the AAB apart from other societies whose membership cohorts are more homogenous. Therefore we want to organise an event that brings together this group in order to help build cross-disciplinary linkages. We surveyed our ECP cohort and the consensus was that you would like the AAB to organise an event that mixed opportunities to present their research and to discuss skills\, careers and training. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApplication process for Workshop Participants \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe can invite a maximum 50 in-person participants to this event\, which is open to both AAB members and non-members. We are currently searching for sponsors to support the meeting but the final registration will be no-more than £100 for the two-day event\, which includes a single night of accommodation. Delegates must be able to fund their own travel to the event. \n1.  We will ask potential attendees to apply for the workshop by telling us why it would be useful for their career. Deadline for these applications is October 15th. Applicants will be anonymously selected on both the strength of their application statement and also on their current position so that we have a mix of attendees from across sectors. Selected participants will be able to register for the meeting before November 16th. \n2. Selected participants will have the opportunity (not compulsory) to submit an abstract in order to either present a current project with a short talk or poster presentation. The deadline for abstract submission will be November 3rd. \nIn an AAB context Early Career Professionals are students and anyone within 5-years of finishing full-time education and this 5-years  is exclusive of any time spent on career-breaks\, maternity leave etc. We very much encourage applications from across sectors.

SUMMARY:Creating Canopy: the biology and practice of establishing trees and woodlands for people and nature
DESCRIPTION:VISIT MEETING WEBSITE\nWoodland creation has never been more important.\nWe need more woodland for people to enjoy\, for nature\, to sustain our timber security and to help reduce the impact of climate change. We need more trees in urban areas for health\, well-being and environmental benefits. However the simple act of planting or establishing a tree is not quite so simple as it first appears! What is the right tree for the right site? What are evidenced-based scientific\, technical and social challenges and barriers to success? \nUnderpinning these activities is the need for knowledge of tree biology and ecology\, irrespective whether trees are established in urban\, rural or wild landscapes. Creating canopy is not just about planting trees as new nature-based solutions are emerging that help us create new tree and woodland habitats through natural colonisation and regeneration. At the present time we are not establishing enough tree and woodland canopy to meeting targets for NetZero emissions and there is uncertainty about the form and structure of tree and woodland canopy cover into the future. Science and technology play a vital role in establishing trees and woodlands. \nThis event has two phases. Firstly a two-day conference will shine a light on new and emerging priorities\, latest research and technical advances related to creating canopy. Second on day 3 we will host a workshop co-organised by the FraxNet Network. Delegates are invited to join for two or three days\, either in-person or virtually. \n\nMajor Themes in ‘Creating Canopies’\n· Urban Canopies – merging engineering with nature solutions? \n· Natural processes – colonisation and natural regeneration to increase taxonomic and functional diversity \n· What grows with what? Tree and woodland establishment in agroforestry systems \n· Planting new productive woodlands – biology\, genetics and ecology \n· A climate of change – genotype and species choices for the future \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInvited Speakers\nDouglass Jacobs\, Regeneration and Restoration Silviculture Laboratory\, Purdue University\, USA \nEstrella Luna-Diaz\, BIFoR\, University of Birmingham\, UK \nManuel  Esperon-Rodriguez\, Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment\, Western Sydney University\, Australia \nJo Bradwell\, Norbury Park Estate and JABBS Foundation \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInvited Speaker for FraxNet meeting \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Cleary\, Senior Lecturer in Forest Pathology\, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences \nRuth Mitchell\, Biodiversity and Ecosystems Group Lead\, James Hutton Institute \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract Submission\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe encourage submission of abstracts for delegates to present their work linked to any aspect of tree-planting. \nSUBMIT AN ABSTRACT HERE\nWe will select oral presentations from both in-person and online delegates so please submit an abstract however you will participate in the meeting. Abstracts submitted will be considered for both the main two-day ‘Creating Canopies’ event and for day three ‘EU-Ash Network’ event. \nA evening poster session and drinks reception will be hosted on Day 1 with the posters on show for all three days of the event. \nWe hope to announce the meeting schedule in September 2023. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDEFRA Travel grants \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe UK Government ‘Department of the Environment and Rural Affairs’ (DEFRA) is supporting the attendance of early career professionals by providing grants to cover travel and accommodation costs. There is a £2000 available which will be shared amongst eliigble applicants. AAB Early Career Professionals are current students or anyone within 5 years of finishing full-time education. \nPlease download the application form and return within one month of the meeting. Successful applications will need to write a short report that reflects on their experience at the meeting. \nDOWNLOAD APPLICATION FORM (doc)

SUMMARY:IPM and Biocontrol 2023: Increasing collaboration across the innovative cycle
DESCRIPTION:VISIT MEETING WEBSITE\nThe IPM Innovative Cycle involves inputs from four distinct yet interconnected sectors: Farmers/Agronomists\, Academic Researchers\, Industrial Researchers and Regulators. However practical experience suggests that there are unfortunate disconnects between these parts of cycle. \nThis event we will bring together participants from across the Innovation Cycle\, each of whom are working towards the ultimate aim of developing novel modes of plant protection. \nThe annual AAB IPM and Biocontrol meeting has a strong reputation as providing an opportunity for early career professionals to present their research. We will maintain this focus whilst bringing together those involved in the IPM industry\, government regulators and agronomists/ farmers who actually have the responsibility to maintain agricultural and horticultural productivity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract Submission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite submission of abstracts from anyone involved in the IPM Innovative Cycle in order to provide either an oral or poster presentation at this event. These will join a selection of invited speakers who are experts in different areas of the innovative cycle. This event will include discussion sessions that will allow delegates to explore best practice to increase collaboration between members of the IPM innovative cycle.u \nWe will assembly the meeting sessions\, oral and poster presentations from submissions received from both in-person and online delegates. Abstracts should be submitted by September 15th 2023. We hope to announce the meeting schedule with oral and poster presentations by the end of September 2023. \nSUBMIT AN ABSTRACT HERE\n\nRegistration opens on August 1st 2023. \nRegistration for in-person delegates closes November 1st 2023. \nRegistration for online delegates closes November 16th 2023.

SUMMARY:16th International Symposium on Aquatic Plants
DESCRIPTION:The meeting will be held in Belgium (city of Antwerp)\, between the 13th and 17th of November 2023. The aim of the conference is to promote debate on all issues relating to the science and management of aquatic vegetation. Interest in aquatic plants has been growing and diversifying and to reflect this there will be a wide Scientific Programme\, which will appeal to scientists and managers. Further\, pre-symposium activities such as workshops on species identification and aquatic plant functional traits will be offered to strengthen the output of conference participation.   \nPrevious Aquatic Plant meetings have had an intimate and collegiate atmosphere which has facilitated discussion\, formal networking and the enjoyment of delegates. \nAn International Scientific Committee oversees the conference and its outputs while a local organising committee looks after the conference management.

SUMMARY:5th International Symposium on the Nitrogen Nutrition of Plants - Nitrogen 2023
DESCRIPTION:Nitrogen 2023\, a meeting of people with an interest in plant nitrogen regulation\, metabolism and transport. Nitrogen 2023 will meet in Sydney Australia on November 6-9\, 2023. \nThe meeting will be held at the University of Sydney in the inner suburb of Camperdown which sits just outside the central business district.\n \nThe Fifth International Symposium on the Nitrogen Nutrition of Plants (Nitrogen 2023) brings together those with a keen interest in plant nitrogen and how best this important nutrient can be used to support plant growth and ultimately produce food\, fibre and oil. With looming global protein shortages expected by 2050\, there has never been a more important period in plant science research to better understand the processes controlling N accessibility\, N metabolism and the delivery of amino acids and proteins to an increasingly hungry planet.  Our ability to meet many of the UN Sustainability Development Goals is intimately linked to improved N fertiliser use and the expansion in availability of protein-enriched foods sourced predominantly from plant inputs.  It’s time to get to work and help solve these problems.

SUMMARY:Plantae Presents: Importance of Self-care and Community Care
DESCRIPTION:The global pandemic has largely affected the global population of adults and children in negative ways. There is an increased in the incidences of anxiety\, isolation\, lower distress tolerance\, and depressive episodes. People engaged in research (mentors and mentees) are more likely to experience these feelings\, often affecting how people build connections. In response\, self-care and community care have emerged as important aspects of everyone’s daily lives. In recognition of “World Mental Health Month\,” this webinar will explore self-care and community care. Speakers will share the strategies they have developed to support the people in their labs and spaces\, as well as insights on balancing community care and self-care. \nThis webinar is hosted by the 2023 Plantae Fellows.

SUMMARY:IUFRO Forest Environment DIV8 Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:IUFRO Forest Environment is pleased to announce the All Division 8 Conference in 2023. The event will be held in-person\, in Évora\, Portugal\, on 24th-27th October 2023\, at the University of Évora\, in the center of this historical UNESCO World Heritage town\, located in South of Portugal\, 140 km from Lisbon. \nThe conference will focus on the critical role of forested landscapes facing pressures driven by the Anthropocene. Many of the increasing challenges require approaches at different spatial and temporal scales to increase understanding about the different ongoing processes and their consequences for ecological and socio-ecological systems to find well-suited solutions towards increasing sustainability. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nChanging landscapes towards sustainability often requires transformational and transitional thinking\, knowledge and innovative approaches\, including changes in how biodiversity is perceived and valued\, new relationships between societal actors\, new rules and management schemes\, as well as supportive rather than controlling roles of governments. All these demands a holistic vision from society and decision-makers to ensure more resilient forested landscapes and better adapted to the most predictable scenarios of climate change and disturbance regimes.
