DESCRIPTION:This workshop encourages Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to make their voices heard in public debates about science. \nStanding up for Science workshop – EU (focus) Online\nDate: Friday\, 27 November 2026 \nVenue: Online \nTime: 10:00 – 13:30 (CET) \nThis workshop encourages Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to make their voices heard in public debates about science. ECRs will meet scientists who have engaged with the media and policy\, learn from respected science communication professionals\, hear from policymakers on how to inform policy\, and receive support on how to talk about complex science topics. \n\nWorkshop places are free\, and they include lunch and refreshments. Unfortunately\, we cannot cover travel costs and suggest that you contact your institution if you need help with travel. \n  \nClick here to apply for a place at our Standing up for Science Workshop. \nProgramme\nSession 1: Your worries and concerns talking about research\nIn this initial group session\, we will discuss where you think public conversations around science are going wrong and why. What are the difficult conversations about research and evidence you have been involved with\, and what made them challenging? The issues you raise in this session will be tackled through the panel discussions. \nSession 2: Researchers and engagement (panel)\nA panel of researchers will share their experiences of engaging with the media and policy worlds. They will discuss why researchers should care about how evidence is used and reported on and share their advice and top tips for helping researchers work with the media and policymakers. \nPanellist information will be added closer to the event. \nSession 3: What journalists and policy makers are looking for (panel)\nA panel of journalists and policy professionals will explain how they approach reporting science\, how evidence is used in policy and what both worlds need from scientists to work effectively. \nPanellist information will be added closer to the event. \nSession 4: Support for having difficult conversations about science and research\nWe will share resources that we have developed specifically aimed at helping researchers have difficult conversations about science and evidence and which will respond to the issues raised in the opening discussion.
