SUMMARY:Plant Health Series: How to communicate science\, win friends and influence people
DESCRIPTION:When? Friday 2 February 2024\, 14:00 to 15:00\nWhere? Online (Zoom) \nAn interactive online lecture communicating science and plant health to the media and public\nRenowned author\, plant enthusiast and media professional Professor Jonathan Drori will provide the ground rules for effective science communication. He will address how to define\, understand and engage with different audiences and how to widen your influence beyond your usual networks. Guided by Jon’s personal experience\, attendees will also learn of common misconceptions in plant biology and the fallacy of ‘the general public’.\n\nThe talk will be followed by an opportunity for an audience Q&A and discussion\, chaired by Dr Mimi Tanimoto\, communications and engagement consultant.\n\nJonathan Drori\nProfessor Jonathan Drori CBE is an author and specialist in the public understanding of science. He is a trustee of the Eden Project\, an Ambassador for the WWF and previously a Trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew and The Woodland Trust. He is an honorary professor of public understanding of science at the University of Birmingham.\n\nAs former BBC executive producer\, Jon was responsible for more than fifty popular science documentaries and series. He was head of digital media and learning channels for BBC Education\, where he led the development of several world-first services\, including GCSE Bitesize\, and also supervised mass UK social-action campaigns for numeracy and computer literacy.\n\nJon has been a frequent public speaker\, including four talks at the international TED conference on plant-science topics which have been viewed millions of times. Recently\, he wrote the bestsellers Around the World in 80 Trees and Around the World in 80 Plants\, which reveal how plants and trees are intricately entwined with human history\, culture and folklore.\n\n\nAudience\nThis event is open to all\, but will be particularly relevant to scientists including those working in areas related to plant health.\n\nContinuing Professional Development (CPD) \nThis event is approved by the Royal Society of Biology for purposes of CPD and can be counted as 3 CPD points. If you are a member of the Plant Health professional register\, this CPD contributes to maintaining your registration.\n\n\nSpecial requirements\nIf you have accessibility requirements\, please let us know during your booking\, and we will do what we can to accommodate your needs.\nCost and booking\nThis event is free to attend and open to all. Advance registration is essential through the link at the top of the page\, and the Zoom meeting link will be circulated to registrants ahead of the event.
