SUMMARY:Advances in Integrated Pest and Pathogen Management
DESCRIPTION:In this exciting meeting we are bringing together the interests of the AAB Applied Plant Pathology and Biocontrol and IPM groups to explore IPM strategies for both pest and pathogen management. We encourage abstract submissions from anyone working on the biology/ecology of IPM projects or in policy research that explores how these strategies can be implemented. In particular we encourage submissions about research/opinion that measure the effectiveness (or not) of the economic-drivers for the uptake of IPM strategies\, both within UK agriculture and farther afield. This event takes place at the Belmont Hotel in Leicester city cebtre\, which is a 5 minutes walk from Leicester train station. Leicester station is on a main North-South trainline so is within easy access from across the UK and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting begins in the morning of November 11th and finishes in the afternoon of November 12th.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Preliminary Schedule (PDF)\nWe are delighted to confirm these invited speakers: \n\nJim Dunwell (Chair of the Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE)\nMartin Lines (Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN))\nPaul Wilson (University of Nottingham)\nAmma Simon (University of Nottingham)\nJonathan Jones (The Sainsbury Lab\, Norwich\, TBC)\nJoe Helps (Rothamsted Research)

SUMMARY:International Advances in Plant Virology 2025
DESCRIPTION:Plant viruses cause global and regional economic and societal losses\, being responsible for a significant proportion of devastating emergent and re-emergent plant diseases. \nThe AAB ‘International Advances in Plant Virology (IAPV)’ conference has a broad remit where we invite participation from scientists who are interested in all aspects of plant virology. These research areas might be on the molecular mechanisms of plant-virus interactions; the applied consequences of plant virus infection; evolutionary and ecological aspects of plant viruses and exploring how plant viruses can be utilised in biotechnology. \nWe are very excited that IAPV25 will be organised in collaboration with the VIRTIGATION project and the Euphresco project (Continued) Community Network for practices in Plant Virology (VIRNET2). \nIntroducing VIRTIGATION: Tomatoes and cucurbits (i.e. cucumber\, melon\, pumpkin\, zucchini and  gourds) are among the most produced fruits and vegetables in the world\,  but are increasingly under threat by emerging viral diseases caused by  begomoviruses (whitefly-transmitted) and tobamoviruses (mechanically  transmitted). To date\, there are only limited bio-based remedies on the  market to tackle the devastation caused by these plant diseases. \nIntroducing VIRNET2: The Community Network for Practices in Plant Virology (VIRNET)  project and its continuation under VIRNET2\, aims to encourage knowledge  exchange and collaboration among plant virology researchers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the past decade AAB have organised IAPV conferences that will bring together plant virologists from across Europe and beyond. To highlight the excellence of this meeting we are happy to share the abstract book from IAPV22 in Slovenia.

SUMMARY:Konzo: forgotten but not gone - Introducing the International Working Group for safe cassava
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening webinar titled “Konzo: Forgotten but Not Gone\,” where we will introduce the International Working Group for Safe Cassava. \nIn this session\, Prof Ros Gleadow from Monash University (Australia) will interview Dr Julie Cliff of the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Mozambique\, a leading expert on Konzo—a neurological disease linked to the consumption of improperly processed cassava. \nAlongside the interview\, Prof Ros Gleadow will also provide a brief presentation on the group’s efforts to ensure cassava safety worldwide. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about a critical\, yet often overlooked\, global health issue. \nThe webinar is the first in a series we hope will fill the gap left by the CCDN (Cyanide in Cassava Disease Network) news which is no longer published. \nDate: 5th September 2024\nTime: 15:00 CET \nKonzo materials:\nhttps://biology.anu.edu.au/research/centres-units/konzo-prevention-unit

SUMMARY:Bringing Biocontrol and IPM to Market
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade\, the AAB “Advances in Biocontrol and IPM” Conference has become a popular fixture in the national calendar of events. The overall objective has been to create an annual gathering of the IPM community at which policy makers\, experienced researchers\, early career scientists and practitioners can detach themselves from their usual day-to-day pressures and become totally immersed in this important subject. To broaden its appeal still further\, we will continue with a hybrid format to enable both in-person delegates at our regular conference venue and those who prefer to join us online. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScientific Sessions\n1. New Solutions\nAim: To attract presentations on latest developments and novel Biocontrol/IPM approaches nearing completion or recently launched \nConfirmed speaker: Lauren Dipenbrock (University of Florida) \n2. Future proofing development of sustainable control – gap analysis and innovation\nAim: To identify forthcoming gaps/problems the industry will face in effective transition to IPM from conventional chemicals; “New” pests arising from the loss of conventional products; Novel innovations under research to address these issues. \n– Recognizing the potential that in some cases only early/incomplete datasets may be available for some studies\, and in others there may be a need for caution regarding how much information is released\, this session will include both full papers and short lightening talks as required. \nConfirmed speaker: Chris Wallwork (Agrii) \n3. Making it work in the field\n Aim: To encourage contributions from Growers/ Supermarkets. \nConfirmed speakers: Ron Stobart (Sainsburys)\, Andy Howard (Local Farmer): \n Session 4: Bringing certainty for business: Comparing/contrasting global legislation for Biocontrol & IPM\nAim: Compare different legislator approaches to consider best practice. It is hoped various industry sectors would be interested in the regulatory environment (uncertainty; small size/limited resources ….) \nConfirmed speakers: Roma Gwynn (Biorationale)\, Michael Braverman (Rutgers University\, IR4)
