Genetics Society Arabidopsis Meeting: RICE TRANSFORMATION WORKSHOP

April 20 @ 13:00 - 18:00

Description

Transgenic plants have been fundamental to our understanding of plant biology and revolutionized commercial agriculture. However, for many crops, transformation and regeneration remains a significant bottleneck. To address this need GARNet are sponsoring a workshop at Durham University Department of Biosciences focused on plant transformation that will offer both theoretical and practical advice.

This hands-on workshop is aimed at PhD students and early career researchers interested in translating Arabidopsis research into cereals, who already have some experience with basic plant tissue culture.

Durham Centre for Crop Improvement Technology has established a Crop Transformation Facility – a unique enabling technology amongst the N8 Universities. They have developed efficient transformation procedures for wheat, rice, and barley, and have Genome Editing expertise in rice.

This is a great opportunity to get an insight into the experimental techniques involved in rice transformation, talk to experts in rice research, and find out more about the rice community.

The lab-based workshop, led by rice transformation expert Dr Cunjin Zhang, will provide hands-on experience of aseptic technique, plant tissue culture, tissue sampling, explant preparation, and the generation of somatic embryogenic callus. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice (1) seed sterilisation (2) callus subculturing and (3) see a demonstration of culture inoculation and proper handling of Agrobacterium .

All lab equipment and materials (e.g. lab coats) will be provided – all you need to bring is you (and a notebook and pen)!

This event is FREE of charge for attendees of the Genetics Society Arabidopsis Meeting 2020 at Durham University – please ensure you are registered for this event in order to reserve a place at this workshop. Accommodation can be booked through the link.

Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Registration deadline: 1st March 2020
